Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization which possessed Wikipedia, has filed a lawsuit against the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), thus challenging the massive programs of the US government oversight.

Initiative of this organization will join eight other organizations, and will be represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Wikimedia Foundation has made this claim in order to prevent massive surveillance program, thereby protecting the rights of users worldwide.

Using surveillance techniques, NSA was able to intervene in virtual communication through high capacity cables and routers through which the Wikimedia connecting readers and contributors of Wikipedia. This method of surveillance is authorized to America to monitor only people who do not have US citizenship. However, as Wikimedia states, mass surveillance network "backbone" (key networking website), is a threat to intellectual freedom and the spirit of information, two forces that keep alive the Wikimedia Foundation.

According to the foundation, the practices of NSA surveillance amendments violate the First and Fourth US Constitution, which protects freedom of speech and unreasonable seizures and searches. Practices spying agency, originally discovered by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also violate Article III of the Constitution, which states the authority of US courts.
